A woman's profile emerged from the earth... Some objects decorate. Others observe. This vase by Bernard BUFFAT belongs to the second category. On its main face, a face emerges in bas-relief: a streamlined profile drawn in a single line, engraved eye, deep brown full lips, and a cabochon-shaped nose. A hairdo of grooves in concentric arcs follows the curve of the piece like a dance movement. On the reverse, the glaze alone, speckled and vibrant, lets the material speak. The wavy collar, viewed from above, forms a figure-eight silhouette of rare elegance. The interior, glazed in a delicate pale mauve, reveals a care found only in true artisans. The glaze recalls an ancient stone: ochre, sienna, and tobacco, speckled with celadon and turquoise reflections. It changes with the daylight. Bernard BUFFAT was a craftsman-potter and a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, a title that honors the excellence of the craft. His name remains associated with La Grange aux Potiers, a workshop in the DrĂ´me region of Provence. This piece bears his handwritten monogram and the mention "UNIQUE PIECE" under the base.
