Ceramic vase signed by Marcel Guillot, 1950s. Sculptural handle, engraved decoration and polychrome glazing. A typical piece of French ceramic modernism. Trained at the School of Applied Arts in Paris and having worked at the Sèvres Manufacture, Marcel Guillot opened his own workshop and became one of the institutional figures of post-war French ceramics: he co-organised the first Salon of Art Ceramists in France in 1949 with Pol Chambost, which he would lead for a long time before passing the baton to Jacques Blin. He exhibited at the Art Workshops alongside Jouve, Innocenti, and the Orlandos, with an atypical style for the 1950s — very geometric decorations and controlled incisions. This arch-handled vase is a direct expression of that: comb-scarified friezes, cartouches with radiating patterns, satin glazes in a range of deep greens and earthy browns that thicken in the hollows of the decoration. Excellent condition.
