Magnificent set of three wall sconces by Mathieu Mategot. France, 1950s. Very rare pieces that are difficult to find from this fabulous designer. Structure in yellow lacquered perforated metal encircled with brass. The reflectors are made of brass, with small openings allowing a slight beam of light to pass through. Brass details adorn and decorate the sconces. Each holds two small screw-in bulbs, 6 in total (provided). Height 32 cm. Width 26 cm. Depth 6 cm. Excellent overall condition, with some signs of age, nothing significant, see photos. They work perfectly. Mathieu Mategot: 1910 - 2001. Mathieu Matégot was born in 1910 in Tapio-Sully, Hungary. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Budapest from 1925, where he met Vasarely. He arrived in Paris in 1931. From 1939 to 1944, he dedicated himself to tapestry work. During World War II, he was assigned to a mechanical construction factory and worked with steel and its derivatives. Marked during the war by perforated sheet metal in Germany, he imagined a new use for metal applied to decoration. In 1964, he decided to devote his time exclusively to tapestry and ceased decoration. As the first non-figurative cardboard painter, accustomed to wall optics as a painter and theatre decorator, he created new cardboard designs in a completely innovative style published in Aubusson. In his early days, he was influenced by Jean Lurçat but later freed himself to adopt a rigorously abstract conception. An Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, he received the Grand Prix d’honneur at the International Exhibition in Madrid in 1953, the Gold Medal from the Society for the Encouragement of Art and Industry in 1955, an honorary diploma at the Brussels World Expo in 1958, and the Gold Medal at the XII Triennale in Milan, he is recognised as a major artist. His well-deserved reputation earned him commissions from Air France and the casino in Cannes.
