First, an image is glazed. Then it is very quickly brought to a temperature of about 1000 degrees. The workpiece is exposed to the outside air. Due to the rapid cooling, the glaze will show craquelures. Then the workpiece is placed in a sawdust barrel. The sawdust ignites and creates smoke. The smoke draws into the crackle.
