At the same time, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886, for shadow theatre at the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances by creating innovative coloured backdrops. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, establishing himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolour (he painted around a thousand watercolours).
