Murano glass pendant by Sylcom, Italy, 1990s

Superb Murano glass chandelier by Sylcom, made in Italy in the 1990s. The Sylcom factory was founded in Venice in the 1950s and continues to operate today, preserving the ideas and techniques of Venetian glassblowers. Murrine is one of the most complex and time-consuming techniques of Murano. First, the artist rolls a central rod in many different coloured glasses. When this rod is cut crosswise into thin pieces, they display multicoloured sections. These sections are arranged on a surface, and the blown and shaped objects are rolled over them while hot. The multicoloured pieces adhere to the surface of the object, giving it an extremely picturesque appearance. Murrine glass is admired and highly sought after worldwide.
