Rare: small side table or bedside table by RENE GABRIEL (1950s).

René Gabriel (1890-1950) is an important designer of mass-produced furniture. Graduating from the top schools, he embarked on a difficult journey with this idea: "There he had to engage in a fierce struggle against all sorts of obstacles and prejudices. Aside from the aesthetic and rational qualities that characterise his work: practical, simple, welcoming, human furniture, brightened with vivid colours, René Gabriel had the incomparable and difficult merit of steering the issues of equipment and decoration of the home towards the future." (Docantic). This small bedside or occasional table perfectly reflects this approach that is both simple, functional, and aesthetic. The piece is simply made, with quite a bit of plywood (for cost), but the Art Deco influence is here more than palpable, striking! :) The drawer fronts, in particular, are made of fluted solid wood and rounded at the edges, enhanced by beautiful metal pull handles; the bottom of the piece also features a discontinuous leg that wraps around the plinth. The drawers function perfectly. The René Gabriel Modèle Déposé stamp can be found on the back. This piece is in its original patina, and aside from a few superficial signs of wear, it is in excellent overall condition! Solid, clean, and stable, ready for use.
