Small antique wooden table from Korea dating back to the early 19th century (Joseon Dynasty). This type of lightweight table is called "Soban" in Korean, meaning "small tray." It was widely used as an individual dining table to present and serve food, but also as a small desk, incense burner stand, and altar table. Its lightweight and low profile are suitable for traditional personal use and portable floor use. Before the twentieth century, it was exclusively used by men. Women and children ate at different times and places. This small table was the size of a tray and was sufficient for one person's needs. The table currently offered was likely made from Ginkgo wood and covered with red lacquer. The top surface, with a slightly raised edge, has a twelve-sided shape with soft corners. The table is supported by four legs turned outward, resembling tiger paws, which is why this specific type is also known as "Hojokban" (tiger-paw tray). Two stretchers connect the legs for better stability. It is an antique piece that shows a beautiful patina due to use and care over the years. The National Folk Museum of Korea in Seoul has a large collection of similar Hojokbans, such as items 000213, 001516, and 001626. Height: 26.5 cm Depth: 41 cm. Period: 19th century.
