This beautiful bonbonnière box in the shape of a rabbit is made of turquoise blue opaline. This "fair opaline" depicts a small hare holding an egg between its paws. Dating from the late 19th century or very early 20th century, pressed-mould opalines were sold at fairs and popular markets. This box comes from the glass and opaline factory in Vallerysthal - it is signed in stick letters in the mass. It is listed in the 1902 catalogue Ref. 4247. Consisting of two parts, it was used to hide small sweets, dragees, or chocolates. The details are precise and delicate. I note numerous chips on the edge of the lower part and small visible chips at the base and on the edges. There is a moulding defect at the mouth of the hare and marbling in the glass. Dimensions: 8 X 5 cm. This opaline is rare: it is a lovely opaline to collect, to give as a gift, or to repurpose as a small sugar bowl on your table, or as a ring holder...
