Pair of wall sconces model NX40, designed by Louis Christiaan Kalff (1897-1976) for Philips, in the Netherlands, in the late 1950s. An iconic creation of post-war Dutch modernist design, combining a cylindrical diffuser in satin opal glass, an elegant bent wood band, and an ivory lacquered metal structure. The design is distinguished by the purity of its lines and the balance between the warmth of the wood and the softness of the opal glass. The enveloping band forms a sculptural silhouette, characteristic of Louis Kalff's work for Philips. An architect, designer, and artistic director at Philips, Louis Kalff is one of the important figures in 20th-century Dutch industrial design. A period set, particularly interesting for enthusiasts of modernist furniture and Mid-century design. Sold as a pair. Signs of use related to their age, particularly on the metal fixings; please see the photos. Glasses are undamaged. Electricity tested, cables and E27 sockets are recent. Bulbs not included.
