When talking about caucasian carpets, we are referring to carpets originating from the southern, eastern and northern regions of the caucasus mountain range. Pre-1925 carpets fall into five groups: kazakh, karabakh, sjirvan, kuba and dagestani carpets. Carpets from the karabakh region often have soft patterns and are reminiscent of persian carpets. Apart from this classification, there are also ganja, silé and varnished carpets. These carpets are distinguished by their very varied and imaginative geometric patterns. We sometimes find, in stylized form, figures of animals or motifs.
