Rare small 17th century Dutch (nursery) cushion cabinet oak white painted
In the Netherlands this model of cabinet was called a 'Tafelkast' (table cabinet), because the base resembles Dutch Renaissance and early Baroque tables. Cabinets of this type are usually made in larger dimensions. This rare example is much smaller and was specifically designed for the rooms of newborn children of wealthy or noble families. For that reason they were called 'Kraamkamerkast' or 'Luyermand’s cabinet' in earlier times. This beautiful cabinet was intended for storing linen and other baby supplies. The cabinet consists of two parts, an upper part and a lower part, and is made of solid oak. Several repairs and replacements over the centuries. The base is somewhat unstable, but this is not a problem with normal use. A rare, small-scale table cabinet with a special story: a piece that carries centuries of use and has lost none of its charm. A characterful piece for a classic, rustic or eclectic interior, where the old oak and white paint really come into their own. Period: 17th century. Origin: the Netherlands.
