Pair of "Scottish Terrier" bookends in carved wood.

Authentic and very poetic pair of bookends in Black Forest style, entirely hand-carved from dense solid wood during the 1950s. Each piece in this coordinated set features a small Scottish Terrier sitting at the threshold of its carved wooden niche with a pointed, fluted roof. The artisan has done a magnificent job of gouging and chiseling to reproduce the rough texture of the animal's typical fur, enhanced by small contrasting round eyes and a delicately hand-painted red tongue. A rarity: each dog retains its original patinated brass side attachment chain. A superb example of mid-century European folk animal art, ideal for structuring a charming library or dressing a retro desk. Features: • Theme: Scottish Terrier Dog / Black Forest. • Materials: Carved gouged solid wood and brass. • Era: Circa 1950-1960. • Dimensions (each): Height 20 cm|Length 12 cm|Width 12 cm. • Condition: Splendid period conservation state. The wood is sound and heavy, with a slight patina of time very clean to the ear of a dog, attesting to its total historical authenticity.
