Very close to Amsterdam, you will find the old fishing village of Volendam, located on Lake IJsselmeer. It is known for its pretty harbour, fishing trade, authentic Dutch character, and traditional costumes. The historic village is situated by Lake Markermeer and once had direct access to the North Sea via the Zuiderzee. Due to its good location by the water, many fishermen settled in the village. Compared to other regions of North Holland, Volendam has many Catholic residents who stand out from other Dutch people not only because of their beliefs but also due to their typical costumes and their own dialect, Volendams. Volendam is also known throughout Holland for its residents' love of music: several famous musicians who have made their mark with their own style of music, the palingsound ("eel sound", see below), come from Volendam. By the way, if you visit Volendam, be sure to try a smoked eel sandwich!
