Description
Old and rare "penu" pestle of french polynesia. This object was excavated during earthworks in tahiti before coming into the possession of a belgian collector. The traces of barnacle testify to a long stay by the sea. This example of volcanic rock is remarkable for its beautiful symmetry. Its summit separated into two appendages indicates that it comes from the society islands (archipelago including the island of tahiti). The simple but balanced sculpture raises this traditional object to the rank of the most beautiful pieces of design. An indispensable object of traditional daily life, the pestle was used in polynesia to crush the pulp of the fruit of the breadfruit and prepare medicines.
