Pair of Imari porcelain plates, Japan, Meiji period 1880-1920. Style and origin. These are Imari porcelain plates, produced in Japan during the Meiji era. Intended for export to Europe, they illustrate the enthusiasm for Japonisme in the late 19th century. Technical details. Shape: Eight-lobed polylobed rim, typical of late Imari export productions. Decoration: Classic Imari palette in three colours: cobalt blue underglaze + iron red and gold highlights overglaze. Reserves: Alternating panels of red with floral patterns and white medallions featuring peonies and plum blossoms. Centre: Circular medallion painted in blue underglaze with a motif of pines, rocks, and birds, symbolising longevity.
