Rosewood marquetry commode, Louis XV Louis XVI transition style – mid 20th century
This rosewood marquetry chest of drawers elegantly embodies the spirit of the Transition style, a period when the sensual curves of Louis XV gradually refine to embrace the symmetry and rigor of Louis XVI. Its delicately curved body, with a protruding front and cut-corner uprights, creates a harmonious silhouette that reflects craftsmanship inspired by the great cabinetmakers of the 18th century. The rosewood, chosen for its warm and pinkish hues, reveals remarkably fine marquetry, where geometric patterns and a central floral decoration respond to each other with a precision that highlights the quality of the execution. The pink veined marble top adds an extra touch of nobility, while the ring handles, corner drops, central fittings, and gilded bronze feet enrich the whole with a refined brilliance. The curved legs extend the softness of the Louis XV style, but their already straighter line announces the neoclassical influence of Louis XVI, creating a subtle balance between movement and structure. This piece, made in the mid-20th century, is part of the tradition of prestigious furniture that respectfully reinterprets the decorative codes of the 18th century, offering a strong and timeless decorative presence. It immediately brings an atmosphere of distinction to an interior, whether placed in an elegant entrance, a refined living room, or a characterful bedroom, and captivates with the richness of its materials, the precision of its marquetry, and the nobility of its style. In good condition after restoration in our cabinetmaking workshop. A chip on the back of the marble (see photo). Finish: waxed with shellac. 667V.
