Zimmer finds his inspiration for example in nature, the cosmos or biblical contents, but he does not have concrete models such as photos in the painting process: "All my paintings are invented situations. They are experiences that are expressed in the painting." At the end of the 1970s, Zimmer formed the "Young Fauves" with colleagues such as Rainer Fetting and Helmut Middendorf. Today, he is one of the most important contemporary German artists and his works enjoy worldwide success.
