Designed by Anders Pehrson for Ateljé Lyktan and introduced in 1968, the "Bumling" table lamp is crafted in brass and distinguished by its generously proportioned cylindrical shade with softly rounded contours, designed to recess the light source and provide direct yet glare-free illumination. Its name derives from the Swedish colloquial word bumling, meaning "clumsy" or "large and awkward", chosen ironically by the designer to reference the shade's deliberately oversized form. As the driving force behind Ateljé Lyktan's design renewal from 1964 onwards, Pehrson turned the Bumling series into one of the company's greatest commercial successes and one of the most recognisable icons of Scandinavian lighting design.
