Ceramic floor vase with relief pattern, West Germany, 1970s

A ceramic vase from West Germany, produced in the 1970s, represents the peak era of West German decorative ceramics. This substantial piece combines a monumental form with the characteristic relief decoration of the period, giving it a distinctive sculptural presence. The vase is built on a classic form that tapers upward, interrupted by a horizontal band of raised relief encircling the body. The glazed ceramic surface creates a contrast of textures, with smooth areas set against the dimensional ornament running around the vessel. The proportions balance the substantial scale without overwhelming; standing nearly fifty centimetres tall with a twenty-centimetre diameter, the piece carries the monumentality typical of large floor vases. West German ceramics of the 1960s and 1970s represent a distinct chapter in European craft history. Dozens of manufactories concentrated in the Rhineland and Westphalia regions produced millions of decorative ceramic pieces during this period, experimenting with form, glazes, and surface treatments. The characteristic reliefs, often featuring abstract or geometric patterns, became a recognizable signature of this production. Pieces from that era, marked simply 'West Germany,' now attract collectors seeking bold examples of 1970s aesthetics and the distinctive Fat Lava style that emerged from these workshops. A vase of this scale works as a standalone decorative element positioned on the floor beside a sofa, in an entrance hall, or anchoring a corner of a living space. The wide opening accommodates arrangements of dried grasses, branches, or tall floral compositions with ease. Condition is assessed as good, with no significant flaws noted. The ceramic retains its consistent glaze surface and well-defined relief pattern.
