Copper & Black Pendant Lamp by Werner Schou for Coronell Elektro — Denmark, 1960s

This pendant is instantly recognisable as the work of Werner Schou — a master of combining copper and black metal in sculptural lighting forms that are as dramatic unlit as they are when switched on. Two tiers of curved copper tubes radiate outward from a dark teak-look top plate, held together by a ring of curved black metal panels, each set with a small faceted crystal insert that catches and refracts the light. When lit, the copper tubes glow a deep amber from within, and the crystal inserts sparkle against the black — the effect is rich, warm and unmistakably 1960s Danish.Werner August Hugo Schou was the owner and a key figure behind Coronell Elektro, the Danish lighting company he established in 1964 and which operated until 1991. Throughout that period, the company produced a distinctive body of work characterised by the interplay of copper, black metal and decorative glass elements — pieces that have become increasingly sought after by collectors of mid-century Scandinavian lighting.This example is in good vintage condition and retains its original copper hanging chain and original teak-look cover plate at the top — a detail that is frequently missing. Some areas show slight surface corrosion consistent with age, but nothing that detracts from the lamp’s considerable presence. E27 bulb.
