Square coffee table in brass, smoked glass and lucite Karl Springer style. 1970s. Superb condition, some micro scratches on the smoked glass. Free delivery throughout France. Dimensions: Square of 120 cm side. Height: 40 cm. Born in Berlin and based in New York, designer Karl Springer brought a chic, haute couture sensibility to furnishings. At its peak in the 1970s, springer work was a favorite of the glamorous elite, who appreciated the novelty of pieces finished in rich, striking materials, from exotic leathers and skins to lacquer and chrome metal. In a sense, Springer was a pre-postmodernist. Just as the boring, safe, corporate uniformity of late 20th century modernism pushed Ettore Sottsass, Michael Graves and others to explore provocative new structures and materials in design and architecture. Springer was driven to infuse his designs with a new and seductive energy and elegance. The chairs, tables, credenzas and other forms of furniture created by Springer are generally simple, yet substantial, and often feature sturdy, rounded lines. The appeal of his work lies in Springer's insistence on rigor in construction and, above all, in his taste for unusual materials and finishes. He used lucite, brass and bronze, as well as chrome and polished steel, and revived exquisite finishes rarely seen since the days of art deco masters such as Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and jean-jacques ruhlmann.
