Pair of large hand-painted plates, sailing boat and landscape – late 19th century

A pair of large hand-painted ceramic plates, dating from the late 19th century. Each plate is decorated like a true painting. Signed within the decoration, they testify to delicate pictorial work: the painter has applied their brush strokes with finesse, revealing the texture and various layers of paint that give the whole a beautiful depth. One features a large sailing ship rigged with a lateen sail, while the other depicts a pond or water landscape at sunset. The treatment of the water, sky, and clouds recalls the sensitivity of Impressionist painters, while the palette of deep browns, nuanced greys, and subtle greens also evokes the atmosphere of the Barbizon school. Due to their large format, the quality of their execution, and the originality of their medium, these plates form a particularly decorative set.
