1970s lamp in the style of Aldo Tura, in gilded brass and glass. Total height with shade: 62 cm. Base dimensions only: H 32 L 22 D 12 cm. Aldo Tura is one of the most enigmatic and polarising figures in Italian design. Glamorous bar carts, coffee tables, cabinets, and many others resist categorisation and draw inspiration from Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Baroque, Surrealist, and modernist styles. Throughout his career, Tura went through distinct phases in terms of aesthetics, influences, and finishes, making his life's work exciting and diverse. Tura established a furniture production house in 1939 in Lombardy, and some of his early works focused on tables, decorative lamps, and more. He then expanded into bar furniture such as rolling carts, cabinets, and complementary bar items like ice buckets and cocktail shakers. The eccentric, shiny surface of lacquered goat skin is a constant, as are eggshell, parchment, and leather. In the 1950s, Tura began using hand-painted figurative panels on the surfaces of cabinets, serving utensils (such as carafes), and other pieces. He even reproduced famous works by artists such as Monet and Bruegel and medieval art, sometimes playfully embedding paintings into oversized book-shaped cabinets. Although he had a preferred colour palette of rich chocolate browns and deep emeralds, his style remained consistently difficult to define. Tura was different from most of his Italian contemporaries, yet he shared the same reverence for traditional craftsmanship and artisanal techniques of the country. He never followed the growing trend of mass-produced industrial furniture and instead focused on creating small, meticulously crafted collections.
