Biedermeier compote, transparent crystal, Czechia, 19th century

A compote from the second half of the 19th century, made in the Bohemian region of Czechia, representing the craftsmanship of Biedermeier utilitarian glassmaking. Made from clear crystal with a slightly cool, colourless hue. The vessel features a wide, shallow bowl with a decorative, irregularly serrated rim and walls adorned with vertical, oval cuts. The slender, baluster stem with hand-cut facets smoothly transitions into a massive, hexagonal base with pronounced edges. The integrated structural elements are characterised by consistent proportions and restraint—true to the principles of Biedermeier, where balance of form and practicality were paramount. The crystal surface is smooth and glassy, and the whole piece presents an authentic patina, with small chips visible on the rim and base in areas of use. No signs of restoration—the object has retained its undisturbed, historical character of the era. Condition: shows signs of wear and natural patina typical for its age and authentic use. This compote reflects the atmosphere of bourgeois salons at the end of the 19th century, where crystal not only emphasised the status of the home but was a daily witness to small ceremonies. The light reflections refracted on the faceted walls turned the ordinary serving of fruit into a subtle ritual, introducing calm and moderate decorativeness. Minor traces of use tell the story of gatherings and celebrations that over decades have given this object a noble distance.
