Pair of Lamps by Maison Barbier in Steel and Bakelite/Fawn Resin, 1960s-1970s

This elegant pair of lamps, attributed to Philippe Barbier / Maison Barbier, is made of chrome-plated steel with bases in bakelite or resin in tawny/tortoiseshell colour (one of the bases is cracked). Master craftsman Philippe Barbier (1927-2020) created table lamps used on the sets of many French films, as well as furniture and decorations such as coffee tables and candlesticks. The designer and furniture producer worked in Paris during the 1960s and 1970s. He was known for using steel to make his pieces shine. Barbier operated a small studio called Maison Barbier in central Paris, on rue du Pré aux Clercs. In addition to making his own furniture, he sold the works of other designers. Maison Barbier was notably the first to distribute the iconic Tam-Tam stool from 1968 by French designer Henry Massonnet. Barbier also contributed to the design of the stool, which is still in production today. Barbier lamps were very popular for their unique designs, which often featured elegant curves and bases made of stone or polished metal. Their striking shapes caught the attention of many directors. Among the films in which Barbier lamps appear are Le Retour du Grand Blond (1974), Peur Sur La Ville (1975), Nous Irons Tous Au Paradis (1977), Le Mac (2010), and Dans La Maison (2012). The lamps come with their original shades (some marks on the shades). Electrification verified. Total height: 43cm, including 22.5cm for the shades.
