Millennial textile recovery craft. Beautiful vintage kantha bedspread from bengal. Size 131 X 208. Antique piece 100% cotton hand embroidered with chevron patterns. Handmade in the bengal region of bangladesh or india. Originally, the inner fabric pieces were made of reused fabrics and the outer layer was a new fabric decorated in an elaborate way. The word kantha comes from the sanskrit "kontha" which means "rags". It is an ancient art registered as an intangible heritage of humanity by unesco. The peasant women of bengal assemble several layers of used clothing, most often saris, which they embroider to make blankets or bedspreads. In the villages, after work in the fields and the house, women gather, without consideration of caste or religion, to paint with needles and make the colors vibrate. Embroidery becomes a real social bond for these women whose conditions are precarious. This exceptional work gives them financial autonomy and improves their status within the community. In detail: vintage hand-embroidered cotton. Size 131 X 208 each piece is unique, and handmade. The imperfections you will find in the embroidery show the uniqueness of the object.
