He studied architecture and industrial design at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts until 1954. After his studies, the young designer completed an internship in Arne Jacobsen's workshop in Copenhagen. Upon returning to Germany in 1963, he opened his own studio in Stuttgart. There, he created numerous innovative designs for renowned manufacturers such as COR, Kill International, and Behr. For Behr, he notably designed the furniture for the German pavilion at the 1969 Montreal World Expo. During this time, Brüning maintained a friendship with Danish designers Jørgen Kastholm and Preben Fabricius. Their collaboration and exchange of ideas were a lasting source of inspiration for both. In addition to his work as a designer, Horst Brüning taught at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences from 1969 to 2000. His work is characterised by clarity, balance of proportions, and functionality. His aesthetic had a profound impact on post-war German modernism.
