Good evening, I am selling this soup tureen (two available) in black glazed ceramic signed by Jean Marais. Very good condition. [Description by Art Angelux] Actor, director, writer, painter, sculptor, ceramist in Vallauris. Jean Marais is one of those great artists who has more than one string to his bow (art). Director, writer, and painter, while the man is famous as an actor in cinema (Beauty and the Beast, Orpheus, Fantômas…), he is also known for his remarkable talent as a sculptor ceramist. Staying in Cabris near Grasse, Jean Marais taught himself ceramics by studying pottery books. In 1973, in Vallauris, he trained in throwing with Jo Pasquali, who encouraged him in his expressive work. Jean Marais's ceramic work is imbued with tales, mythologies, and the roles he has played both in theatre and cinema: wall passer, Nefertiti, goat vase, woman with a jug, vase with snakes, fantastic fauna, Capricorn, lion's head, lantern with 4 faces, … populate the dreamlike universe of the actor, who has managed to reinterpret and modernise myths and unleash the wild and intriguing beauty that invites daydreaming. In 1975, he opened an art gallery in Vallauris (3 avenue Martyrs de la Résistance) with the help of Jo and Nini Pasquali; this gallery complements the one he opened in the 1960s in Megève (Haute-Savoie). Dimensions. Height: 13 cm. Diameter: 13.5 cm.
