Italian cabinet from the high period in walnut, a Piedmontese stipo monetiere from the 17th century with eight drawers and a diamond-shaped door. 17th-century walnut cabinet, known as a stipo monetiere, likely from Northern Italy, specifically Piedmont. Its façade, with rigorous symmetry, features two columns of four drawers surrounding a door adorned with a large diamond, beneath an overhanging cornice: a geometric vocabulary inherited from the Renaissance, with a hint of Spanish influence. The walnut has developed a warm brown patina, and the piece retains its original fittings, lock, and key. Presumably intended for the storage of coins and valuable papers, it is now suitable for organising a collection, documents, or small objects in an office, library, or hallway. Presented as a tall cabinet on two square-section pillars with moulded bases and capitals, and shafts decorated with round-arched arcading. This base is a later addition: the body originally rested on a low base or a chest. Very good overall condition. Original fittings and lock, in working order, with their key. Slight play in the base, which disappears once the cabinet is against the wall. A discreet wall fixing is recommended, as with any tall piece of furniture of shallow depth. Sturdy construction. The piece has been checked by a cabinetmaker and treated against wood-boring insects. Measurements: • Total height: 175 cm. • Width at the cornice: 119 cm. • Depth at the cornice: 32 cm. • Usable depth of the shelves: 15 cm.
