Enamelled ceramic vase with alternating white and black decoration. Period: 60s. Designer: herman kähler. Origin: Denmark. Dimensions: h 19 X d 7. About: Herman august kähler, generally known as herman a. Kähler (6 March 1846 – 16 November 1917) was a Danish ceramic designer and manufacturer who ran the kähler ceramic factory (kählers keramiske værksted) in Næstved, Denmark. Together with his younger brother carl frederik kähler, he took over the management of the factory in 1872. Carl became responsible for the production of earthenware while herman specialized in the manufacture of earthenware stoves. In 1875, after Carl's retirement, herman built a new factory on the outskirts of the city where he produced both stoves and pottery. As a result of his collaboration with the artist vilhelm klein, kähler became interested in obtaining the lustrous red glaze known as maiolica that had been produced in gubbio, Italy, in the sixteenth century. In 1888, he succeeded, developing the now famous ruby glaze known as kähler red. Designer karl hansen reistrup (1863–1929) soon joined the company, helping to produce finely formed and artistically decorated objects, especially vases. Thanks to reistrup's creations, kähler's ceramics achieved considerable success both at the great Nordic exhibition held in Copenhagen in 1888 and at the Universal Exhibition held the following year in Paris. A number of other artists began designing objects for the kähler factory, including thorvald bindesbøll, ha brendekilde, l.a. Ring et svend hammershøi. Their contributions have further strengthened the company's international success.
