Description
Beautiful, very light african goli mask, baule tribe, ivory coast, 2nd half 20th century. The very characteristic, round "moon" goli is crowned by two horns. The baule celebrated peace and joy and sang, danced and drank palm wine. The goli would be used ceremonially at the new harvest, at high visits or at the funerals of notables. Four pairs of dancing masks appear in the goli procession, and this disc mask represents kple kple, the young male adolescents. It symbolizes both the features of the sun and the buffalo. The mask was also danced around the village to ward off evil. It is a humorous mask, representing a mischievous, disobedient child. This item is in good vintage condition, colored with pigments from nature, very nice age and use patina, no cracks or breaks, check the photos for more details! Dimensions: lh 27.5x4x40cm. Weight: 0.407kg.
