Antique organ bench with drawer in oak – Central Europe, circa 1920

This antique oak drawer bench rests on two shaped side panels joined by a through rail, with a long drawer beneath the seat. It originates from Central Europe, dating from the early 20th century, where the oak was assembled using mortise and tenon joints secured with pegs. The drawer bench was a piece of furniture for the hallway and kitchen: one would sit on it to remove shoes, and it provided storage for items that had no other place. The lock indicates that the drawer could be secured, a common practice when the furniture was placed in a passageway. The side panels are made from solid boards with a cut-out foot, featuring a small carved rosette at mid-height. The lower rail spans the two side panels and is secured with pegs. The drawer slides on wooden runners and retains its iron lock entry. The oak has darkened to a glowing honey tone, with the grain visible on the seat. The finish is uneven, more pronounced where hands and legs have rested. The joints are tight, and the structure is solid. It can be placed in an entrance for putting on shoes, at the foot of a bed, or under a window. Its seat height and shallow depth also make it suitable as a narrow console in a corridor. Details.
