A table anchored in wood, softened in wool. I created this unique table from a substantial piece of reclaimed solid oak. The tabletop is over fifty years old, with its distinctly rounded shape evoking the 1970s. After decades of use, the wood is now beginning a new chapter. Rather than erasing its history, the oak has been patiently reclaimed and carefully reworked by a skilled cabinetmaker. Its natural grain, warmth, and character remain visible, preserving the richness that only develops with time and use. For the base, I designed and built an entirely new sculptural form. I upholstered it by hand in soft beige mixed wool, with a layer of upholstery foam underneath. This makes the base pleasantly tactile: soft to the touch and pleasantly yielding when your legs rest against it while sitting at the table. This gentle intervention creates a delicate contrast with the weight and solidity of the oak. The result lies somewhere between furniture and object: robust yet soft, functional yet distinctly sculptural. Its generous surface can be used as a dining or work table, while the upholstered base gives it a warm and inviting presence from all angles. This is not a restored vintage table nor a mass-produced design, but a unique handmade piece where over fifty years of material history meets contemporary design, cabinetry, and upholstery. — Designed and handmade by Roger Haan / Zachte Zaken — Unique piece — Reclaimed solid oak tabletop, over fifty years old — Hand-upholstered sculptural base with upholstery foam — Upholstery in soft beige mixed wool — Made in Maastricht, Netherlands — 2026
