The village of sars-poteries owes the second part of its name to the many craft pottery factories that date back to the eighteenth century. The land for making pottery was being extracted from its soil, with fossil black ash deposits discovered in 1777 being mined since that time and used as an amendment. This industry would have been imported to sars by potters of bouffioulx (belgium). In 1838, there were nine earthen potteries, eight sandstone potteries, and a fossil ash quarry. The large ceramic industry (manufacture of pipes, sinks, sanitary appliances) has long since disappeared. Only small workshops that made pots, jugs, vases and various containers still existed in the 1970s and 1980s. (maine pottery, lempereur, etc.). Unfortunately all these workshops have since closed their doors.
