The designer duo Charles and Ray Eames played a major role in the development of post-war American design. The guiding principle of Eames was to create objects of high quality and great aesthetic sophistication. The use of innovative materials such as cast aluminium and fibreglass, while adhering to ergonomic principles, was revolutionary for the time. Their considerable work has influenced generations of architects and designers. In 1970, Charles Eames was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 1977 to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The couple designed the Fiberglass chair as early as 1948. However, the model was not produced until the early 1950s, as its manufacturing proved too technically complex. The breakthrough was made possible through the use of polyester resin reinforced with fibreglass. Today, the fibreglass chair is considered one of the most important design icons of the 20th century.
