A sculptural art glass ashtray from the famous Škrdlovice glassworks in what was then Czechoslovakia, designed by Jaroslav Beránek. Model No. 5637 is part of the ‘Andromeda’ series and dates from 1956. The heavy, free-form glass body is characterised by its dynamically curved silhouette and deep, visually flowing textures. Through the combination of clear glass and cool shades of blue to violet, the object changes its appearance depending on the angle of light and the viewer’s perspective, taking on an almost fluid, sculptural quality. A characteristic example of experimental post-war Czechoslovak studio glass and, at the same time, a decorative collector’s item which, in addition to its original function as an ashtray, can also be used to great effect as a vide poche or a small art glass bowl.
