Arne Jacobsen's Ant chair is an icon that somewhat resembles the shape of an ant with its head raised. Its slender form belies its strength. Arne Jacobsen originally designed the Ant chairs for the canteen of Novo Nordic, a Danish pharmaceutical company, in 1952. Today, the Ant chair is one of the dominant icons in the Fritz Hansen collection. Although the forms are minimalist, the Ant is an extremely comfortable chair. It is a stackable chair made of oak wood and mounted on a four-legged base of satin-finished stainless steel tubing. The shell is made of die-cast veneer—seven layers of inner veneer and two layers of outer veneer, on the front and back of the shell. The inner veneer is beech.
