Portrait of an unknown artist

Enchanting portrait by an unknown artist. Is it a self-portrait? Is the gaze directed at the mirror? Every time I look at this portrait, I see Kafka - but not everyone agrees, and although I know that Kafka drew, I never associated him with a paintbrush! I find this portrait quite haunting (in a beautiful way) - it’s a portrait that stays with me - long after I move, I still see the artist's gaze. Although he looks a bit dazed, the gaze is very direct. A compelling painting. The painting is signed. I can't read the signature, but it looks Eastern European. Oil on canvas. Unframed. In good vintage condition.
