Wooden bas-relief panel, carved and painted

Carved solid wood bas-relief. The scene illustrates a pastoral landscape that strongly evokes the Basque Country or the bordering mountainous regions such as Béarn. It is a work of direct carving in wood. The relief is quite pronounced, with some areas being high relief, which adds depth to the scene. The wood was painted after the carving to highlight the details. This type of object is typical of popular art or regional artisanal craftsmanship, which was very fashionable in the mid-20th century.
