Convertible Canapé Grete Jalk. Vintage Scandinavian. Era: 1950s/60s. Wood type: teak. Covering: Original fabric. Condition: Good condition, removable cover. Jalk was born in Copenhagen. She studied at the Women's Design School (from 1940 to 1943) with the cabinetmaker Karen Margrethe Conradsen. She completed her studies at the Danish Design School in 1946 and also received instruction from Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She participated in the annual competitions of the Design Museum and the furniture department of the Design School, where she also taught from 1950 to 1960. In 1953, Jalk opened her own design studio. Inspired by the laminated, curved furniture of Alvar Aalto and the moulded plywood creations of Charles Eames, she began to develop her own models with curves. The interest in these unconventional models grew slowly.
