Iridescent gourd vase by Alphonse Cythère, in Rambervilliers, Vosges. This is a vase from the Art Deco period, around 1920. As a ceramic engineer, he developed a metallic lustre glaze known as ‘flamed stoneware from Rambervilliers’ during this time of renewal in techniques. This vase has changing reflections depending on the light and surrounding tones; to give you a clearer idea, I photographed it with different frames and exposures. Typical of its era, it is surprisingly modern and will fit well in vintage or decidedly contemporary interiors. It is obviously authentic and is signed under the base, see photo 10. It measures 26 cm in height, 14 cm at its widest point, and the opening has a diameter of 4 cm. It is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or scratches, and hardly any signs of handling despite being nearly a century old. This beautiful piece weighs 1.1 kg, whereas smaller pieces are sometimes found between 10 and 16 cm in height. Shipping is very well protected via Chronopost Shop2shop for €6.50 or Colissimo to your home for €12.
