Vase from the pungo series by stig lindberg for gustavsberg, published in the 50s. Very good condition. Engraved under the base. A rare and emblematic piece of scandinavian design. The "pungo" vases by stig lindberg belong to a series produced in limited numbers. Lindberg frequently reinterpreted natural occurrences with organic forms; "pungo" means "pocket", which refers to the shape. These sandstone sculptures were glazed with matt white carrara glaze and made by gustavsberg in the 1950s. Stig lindberg was one of the most influential swedish ceramists of the post-war years. His creations include individual pieces of art as well as decorative production items, illustrated by numerous earthenware models and utilitarian items. In 1949, lindberg became artistic director of gustavsberg, the famous swedish porcelain company founded in 1826. He began his career as an assistant to wilhelm kåge in gustavsberg. Kåge had discovered the young lindberg who, like kåge himself, was initially a painter.
