Pair of large embroidered Art Deco tapestries, hunting/myth decor, 1930.

These two textile compositions, embroidered on canvas (cotton, linen, or hemp), are presented under glass in their original frames, consisting of very large moulded oak frames with a warm and deep patina, characteristic of quality productions from the interwar period. The diptych depicts a stylised hunting scene, designed as a narrative in two parts: First panel: an archer, hidden in dense and graphic vegetation, prepares to shoot a deer. Second panel: the hunter, carrying the deer on his shoulders, moves away into an open landscape, suggesting the completion of the rite and the return to the community. The deliberately flattened drawing, the absence of realistic perspective, and the extreme stylisation of human, animal, and plant figures fully place this ensemble within the Art Deco aesthetic, while drawing from an older imagery: that of medieval tapestry and mythological narratives. The palette, subtle and perfectly controlled, blends ochres, browns, greyed greens, golden yellows, and old pinks, giving the whole a great visual softness and timeless elegance. The quality of the embroidery, fine, dense, and regular, attests to a high-end production, most likely intended for a bourgeois interior, where decorative art occupies a central place. On the back of the frames is an original framer's label: “M. Bécheler, Châlons-en-Champagne”. Research identifies this craftsman as Marcel Bécherel (born 10 January 1881 in Tours, died 25 November 1965 in Châlons-sur-Marne), a framer active in Châlons-en-Champagne between 1910 and 1940. This label confirms the authentic and original nature of the framing, an essential element in the appreciation and value of the whole.
