Monogrammed oil on canvas representing a sunset over one of the entrances to the city of chartres. The interest of this work lies in its 5 dimensions: in the 1st plan, large slender trees on the sides frame, in the 2nd plan, old houses in very varied colors intended for guarding the entrance to the city in medieval times. Then, the guillaume gate (3rd shot) as the central subject, appears slightly shifted to the left, to give way to the cathedral to the right and further away (4th shot). The late summer sunset allows for a play of light regularly used by the impressionists (5th shot). Above the door of the front house appears in small letters the date 1888. This work recalls monet's series of rouen cathedrals. The technique of troweled and thick pictorial material also evokes manet's research around 1864. The first construction of this gate of the city wall was built at the end of the 12th century. It bears the name of guillaume de ferrières, vidame of chartres. Located on the route of the gallo-roman aqueduct known as "landelles", observed during the 19th century, the erroneous name of "porte saint-guillaume" appears on the first list of 1840 established at the request of prosper mérimée. It was classified as a historic monument in 1911. The door was destroyed by the german army on the night of august 15 to 16, 1944.
