Venetian glass is a typical glass art from Venice, often from the island of Murano. Traditionally made with soda-lime glass and decorated using artisanal techniques such as gilding, enamelling, or engraving. Production has been concentrated in Murano since the 13th century. Murano is famous for its glass art with a long history of innovations and was a major European centre for luxury glass from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. In the 15th century, Murano glassmakers created cristallo, an almost transparent glass considered the best in the world, and developed a white glass called lattimo resembling porcelain. They then became the leading European manufacturers of mirrors.
