Wall coat rack GW1 'Toonladder' by Coen de Vries for DEVO from the 1950s

GW1 wall-mounted coat rack by Coen de Vries, designed in 1954. The rhythmic interplay of the black tubular steel frame and the coloured metal hooks gives the piece a graphic presence reminiscent of a musical staff or scale. This early version was designed for the Goed Wonen Foundation and produced by DEVO in The Hague. The design was calibrated to the width of a standard interior door and reflects the functional principles of post-war Dutch modernism. The composition of the round steel frame and curved metal hooks in black, red, yellow and white was later revised by Tjerk Reijenga for Pilastro. The condition of this wall-mounted coat rack is very good. The metal hooks have been repainted; the frame shows light signs of wear consistent with age and use.
