Large statuette of kinaree, worshipping, devi in carved wood. Thailand, Burma - Asian art 19th century Hinduism, Buddhism - • Height: 100 cm • Base dimensions: 20 X 11 cm • Weight: 7 kg Wooden worshipper represented standing, dressed in a traditional costume belted with panels folded on the front. He wears a winged tiara. His hands are joined in anjalimudra, mudra of offering and veneration. In Burma, secondary figurines like this one are called "devi" and are placed in front of Buddhist altars, pagodas, stupas or sanctuaries. They originally represented Hindu gods of lower rank. In Burma, they were integrated into the symbolic repertoire of Burmese "Theravāda Buddhism". Carved from a heavy, hard and light wood (probably teak). She wears sumptuous court clothes and a high winged crown, has her hands clasped in front of her chest, and stands on a round plinth. Traces of the original undercoat of plaster and red paint can still be seen.
