A Danish cabinet from the 1960s, manufactured by Hjørnebo. The piece embodies the classic Scandinavian design approach to storage – a rectangular box on slanted legs, where functionality is combined with the elegance of light ash. The construction is based on a simple yet well-thought-out design. The sliding doors move along a grooved track, revealing an interior with an adjustable shelf. The handles are incorporated into the front panels as double indentations, eliminating protruding elements and emphasising the minimalist character of the design. Ash veneer with a distinctive grain pattern covers all visible surfaces, creating a cohesive whole. The slanted solid wood legs lend the unit a sense of lightness, raising it off the floor. The 1960s were a period when Danish furniture design reached the height of its international acclaim. Scandinavian manufacturers, including Hjørnebo, responded to the growing demand for furniture that combined artisanal quality with functionality suited to smaller living spaces. Sliding doors, characteristic of this period, helped to save space in cramped interiors, whilst ash – a light-coloured and durable wood – gave Scandinavian furniture its recognisable, warm character. This cabinet is ideal for storage in the living room, bedroom or hallway. The adjustable shelf allows you to adapt the interior to the height of the items being stored, from documents and photo albums to small electronic devices or textiles. Its compact dimensions mean it can also be placed in smaller rooms. The condition has been assessed as good. The surface shows minor scratches and scuffs indicative of use. Minor chips have been repaired as part of the restoration. More significant signs of wear are also shown in the photographs to give the most accurate representation of the item’s actual condition.
