Antique Provençal-style chest of drawers – Central Europe, around 1900
Antique Provençal-style commode from Central Europe. It comes from domestic furniture at the turn of the century when white paint and fluted columns characterized classical-inspired bedrooms. Commodes of this type furnished the rooms of large houses, combining storage capacity with a refined neoclassical decorative language. The body, with five smooth-fronted drawers framed, is flanked by fluted columns at the front corners and rests on turned feet with a conical profile. The original aged white paint shows occasional losses revealing the wood on the top, while the carved handles in the shape of a rosette retain their relief. In a contemporary bedroom or entryway, it serves as a storage commode, bringing the classic elegance of painted Provençal-inspired furniture.
